Again, a very insightful post, Amish! I think FB enjoys having people register in order to msg other facebook members now. (which is how dating sites allure users -- you can view users all you want, but if you want to communicate, you need to join)
So I am not sure, if giving out @facebook.com emails, and providing a way for non-users to communicate with facebook users is something they would easily do. Will see what happens.
Hope you had a nice thanksgiving!

Palringo has already started to do what you suggest but on mobile or cellular devices.

Currently we connect to all of the major IM services and are in the process of connecting with Facebook chat (I already have a beta working with all of my Facebook friends fully integrated into one unified contact list (with my yahoo, msn and googletalk buddies as well). Others are coming. In addition, we offer voice IM and ability to send photos with one click. And we have recently added presence and location so you can see the location of your buddies. And our location works on most devices, across all networks anywhere in the world (and no need for GPS). In addition, we have a client that works on PC and Mac OSX--so it will soon be possible to use Palringo to connect with your IM and social networks of choice on BOTH mobile and desktop. A much richer experience than exists today.
